Insect frass in the development of sustainable agriculture. A review

Given the current rate of human population growth, mass breeding insects for feed and food is in full industrial development, as a more efficient effective alternative to conventional livestock production animal protein. In these industries, insect excreta (frass) represents one main outputs process, being up 40 times greater than biomass, which why its use organic fertilizer replace agrochemicals considered viable development sustainable agriculture circular economy. Through review all existing literature, this article highlights following benefits frass agriculture: (1) contribution nutrients soil, mainly nitrogen, easily assimilated by plant tissues; (2) addition biomolecules microorganisms that promote growth; (3) increased tolerance abiotic stresses resistance pathogens pests due presence different compounds microorganisms.
